Finding Your Superpowers

Finding Your Superpowers

Ashley Calhoun

When you think of superpowers, someone wearing spandex and a cape, flying and using laser vision may come to mind. But there’s other kinds  of superpowers that you can apply to your everyday life, no radioactive spider needed. We're talking about wielding empathy, resilience, and creative thinking as an entrepreneur.

How to Find Your Superpower

As someone who wears many hats and fulfills all sorts of duties, it can be difficult for entrepreneurs to identify where they shine. Use these questions to help narrow down your superpowers when it comes to leading your team and the people around you.

  1. What are some things you are often complimented on by clients or colleagues?
You can look at reviews or thank you notes to identify patterns.

  2. What are some tasks that bring you joy or you look forward to in every transaction? Make a list of the steps and put a star next to the ones you enjoy the most.

  3. If you were to leverage out your whole day, what would you want to keep on your personal to-do list?

The answers to these questions can show you what tasks you excel in, where people see your value, and what actions you could apply more intentional effort to maximizing.

How to Channel Your Superpower for Good

Once you’ve figured out what your superpowers are, it’s time to make your superpower work even harder for you. Say you’re a great problem solver—you aren’t afraid to get into the nitty gritty with a demanding client and finding solutions to complex problems is your jam. This means you need a problem to solve in order for this superpower to engage. When things are running smoothly, how do you shine?

Take advantage of the problems you’ve already solved in the past and create an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) document that outlines each step of your process and what potential pitfalls can arise. You’ve already solved the problem, so give your team (and future you!) a roadmap to the solution.

Maybe you have more than one superpower. If you’re resilient and a great storyteller, you can write a newsletter or share on social media a short series where you give tips on being resilient in a challenging market. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, either; we offer free resources or a SHIFT Book Club that you can make your own.

Here are some more common professional superpowers that might ring true for you from a recruitment specialist, and some ideas on how to use them to your advantage:

  • The Bridge-Builder: This person is good at resolving conflict and bringing people together. You might have clients that can’t see eye-to-eye on the location they want to live, or how big of a yard they need. With the help of your favorite AI tool, you can create an interactive quiz for clients to help them get on the same page.

  • The Innovator: They see solutions at every turn and are always looking for more efficiency. You can build systems for everything from the moment a potential client finds you to securing reviews when the transaction is complete. Using that same list you created when you were trying to figure your favorite part of the transaction, see where you can find more efficiency. What process needs your innovative approach?

  • The Listener: This person is great at making people feel heard, which builds trust and strong partnerships. You can host “office hours” once a month that would allow for people to share specific challenges that they could use an outside perspective on. Set parameters around the topics that you can assist with and see what happens!

When leaders and their teams understand their strengths, they can figure out ways to make sure that everyone is operating in their best places, at their best. If you’re having a Team Huddle or a retreat where you set goals for the next year, don’t be shy about discussing what each member’s superpowers are - you can set everyone up for even greater success.
