Mid-Year Check-In: 3 Tips to Help You Stay the Course

Each year as we enter the fourth quarter, we spend weeks, often months pouring into our business planning for the upcoming year. We visualize what our year will look like, set goals that we will race to achieve, and outline the impact and difference we want to make in the world and in our lives. What many often forget to do is conduct a checkup on their business plan throughout the year.

A mid-year business check-in is essential for staying the course and making sure you are aligned on your goals and progress. Visiting your goals monthly is ideal, but a mid-year check-in also gives you an opportunity to do a deeper dive into where you are, where you want to be, and how you will get there.

Identify Your 80/20

When conducting a mid-year check-in, give yourself the time and space to reflect on what has worked in the first part of the year. This way you can identify your 80/20. The 80/20 rule, also known as Pareto’s Principle, states that 80 percent of your results typically comes from 20 percent of your efforts. What are the 20 percent of your activities that contribute to 80 percent of your business?

For example, if you have built a referral-based business, take time during your mid-year check in to look at your referrals to understand if the business is coming from past clients, referral partners, or raving fans. Then look at where these relationships originated and what you have done in the past six months to stay top of mind with these individuals. That is where the 20 percent lies; not the idea of referral business but the specific activity that is boosting this flow of clients. Once you dive deep here, you can turn the dial up and finish the year even stronger. Do more of this activity to see greater results in your business.

Ditch What’s Not Working

A mid-year check-in can also show you where you need to course correct. In real estate, the industry is ever-changing and ideas you committed to six to nine months prior may no longer be as effective as you imagined. There’s no ego here, and you don’t need to continue pouring into something that is taking time and effort but giving little to no results.

Analyze these activities and make a choice that will help to keep you on track to reach your goals. Depending on your situation, you may need to drop some activities and replace others. Continue to track your progress and outcomes so you never spend too much time in the wrong place.

Align Your Habits with Your Values

Finally, ensure that your habits are aligned with your personal and professional values. This is a key factor because it helps you to stay inspired and motivated to keep going. If your habits are out of alignment with what you want, you may get burnt out or struggle in different areas. When you feel passionately about what you are doing and that it’s in alignment with your values, you can get through even the toughest of times. This simple check in will help you show up as the best version of yourself.

Since the year is half-way over, it’s the perfect time to have a check-in with yourself. Assess what’s working, what’s not working, and how you want to grow moving so that you continue to build a business that provides the best client experiences from a place of alignment.
